Location


The East Asian Library is located on the third and fourth floors of the west wing of the Frist Campus Center and the adjoining area on the third floor of Jones Hall. In Jones Hall are the Reference Room, Western-language materials, and those Chinese and Japanese bound periodicals cataloged under the Harvard-Yenching system. Offices, the circulation desk, the reserve collection, the (selective) Current Periodicals Room, and the Wilhelm Collection are on the third floor of Frist Campus Center, as are the catalogs and the Periodical Workroom (with the remainder of unbound periodicals). Chinese and Japanese stacks are located on the fourth floor of Frist Campus Center. For detailed explanations, see under the Guide "Locating books".


Food, drinks, and smoking are not permitted in the library.

The East Asian Library is open during the normal academic year:

Reserve books not returned within one hour after opening the following day and recalled books not returned within ten days are subject to fine.

Borrowing Privileges


Borrowing privileges are extended to all members of the University community with valid identification cards, as well as to all members of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Westminster Choir College. Please refer to the Access Office in Firestone Library for any further questions.

Rare Book Room Access

Most of the items of the Rare Book Collection are housed in the Mudd Library, with access five days a week from 9 to 5. Users are required to register first at the East Asian Library and obtain a Rare Books Use form. Access to call numbers and other information on the Rare Books Collection is only available at the East Asian Library itself. Details on access are in the document Using Rare Books.

Outside visitors

Outside visitors are welcome to use the East Asian Library. For borrowing privileges, please contact the Access Office in Firestone Library. Prospective users of the East Asian Library can apply to the Friends of the Princeton University Library Visiting Fellowships for some limited funding; note that competition is fierce.

Interlibrary Loan


Interlibrary borrowing privileges are extended to all valid users of the East Asian Library. Those who need materials from other libraries should fill out an Interlibrary Loan Request form, available at the circulation desk. For assistance (recommended for all Chinese, Japanese and Korean studies material), please consult the reference librarians in Rooms 314 and 315, Martin Heijdra (mheijdra@princeton.edu) for Western and Chinese material, and Yasuko Makino (ymakino@princeton.edu) for all Japanese and Korean material.

Carrels


Faculty members, graduate students, and seniors are eligible for carrels; visiting scholars who plan to stay for some time may also be assigned a carrel, space permitting. Application forms are available at the circulation desk, or please contact Gönül Yurdakul (yurdakul@princeton.edu), Supervisor of Circulation Services.
